Geomancy with a sungka board

Deriving the Geomantic Figures Part 2

Continued from Part 1

Forming the Nieces

The Nieces are formed by looking at the Mothers and Daughters, and applying some basic addition.

Niece 1 (N1) is derived from Mother 1 (M1) and Mother 2 (M2).

Niece 2 is derived from M3 and M4.

Niece 3 is derived from D1 and D2.

Niece 4 is derived from D3 and D4

To form a Nieces, add the dots in the horizontal lines of the figures they are derived from. If the resulting number is odd, the corresponding line in the Niece is one dot. If the result is even, the corresponding line in the Niece is two dots.

For  example: To form Niece 1, add the Fire line of M2 to the Fire line of M1. As you can see in the diagram, the Fire line of M1 is 1 and Fire line of M2 is 2. 1+2=3. 3 is an odd number, so the fire line of Niece 1 contains one dot. Do this for the Air, Water and  Earth lines as well.

Here’s the break down:

Fire lines added – (M2+M1) = (2 + 1) = 3 = an odd numberAir lines added – (1 + 1) = 2 =  even number

Water lines added – (2 + 1) = 3 = odd

Earth lines added – (1 + 1) = 2 = even

If you are confused, the following diagram, where I form the fourth Niece step-by-step, may help:

The Nieces are then placed in the geomantic shield, under the Mothers and Daughters, from right to left.

There are two Witnesses, and they are derived from the Nieces using the same method used to form the Nieces. Witness 1 is derived from N1 and N2. Witness 2 is derived from N3 and N4. The Witnesses are then placed on the geomantic shield, under the Nieces, from left to right.

Forming the Judge

The Judge is derived from the two Witnesses, in the manner described above, The Judge is then placed in the geomantic shield, under the Witnesses.

*****

Some people like to form a sixteenth figure, called the Reconciler. I don’t typically use the Reconciler, but if you feel the need to include it in your reading, it is derived from the Judge and the first Mother, in the manner described above.
